I love the way you address the moments that are sometimes equated with hypnosis, like driving on a familiar road, and differentiate them from an actual state of hypnosis. Your emphasis on finding your own path while hypnotizing was a good one as well. I learned a lot from this post, and you make several excellent points.

I am one of those people who constantly talks to themselves, so I was drawn to this post from the title alone. To me, your steps to self-seduction sound almost as if the heart of what you’re asking us to do is to become better at listening to ourselves, and thereby to others. Overall, you’ve provided me with the steps to turn a habit into a positive, life influencing technique.

This is a great question that gets to the heart of one of the foundations of hypnosis—language. It is such a powerful tool and understood so little, that any questions about its rules or meanings can only further our understanding. Please post a follow-up response if you ever form an adequate understanding of the term.

Dear Jon.
I very much enjoy your thoughts, hints, books and advice.
I started out 20 years ago, at the age of 15 playing jazz-tenorsaxophone. I was totally in love with the music and the instrument, so after leaving school, it became my living for many years.
- Then I had children and family, and as a free-lance musician it was a very hard, difficult (and unhealthy) way to make a responsable living. I ended up in deep depression. Though I was well covered by doctors and terapists, what really healed me, was that I (in my desperation) found self-hypnosis. It got to me back on my feet, and I knew that I had found a new path. This spring I finished a good and very "hands-on" education in Denmark as a hypnotist/hypno-therapist.
I feel the same joy, flow, love and exitment as when I started playing music. It has changed my life, and I feel that I found my lifes .2nd. endevour...
Best Wishes

I think you make some valid points in this post. For one, most, if not all, hypnotists are performers on some level. At the end of the day, even if you don’t agree with “street hypnosis,” don’t you think that any media exposure hypnosis gets is good for it? As they say, “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”

There are many great elements within this metaphor, but I think it misses a key element of learning. Learning isn’t exactly like climbing a mountain, where there is an easy path and a hard path. The best way to learn depends on the student and their goals, and this comparison makes it seem like there is a “right” way to learn and a “wrong” way. Perhaps the man who chose the hard path learned more about the mountain than the man who followed the easier path. Both men learned and reached the top, but each learned something different.
